Steeves Summary # 19: We've Landed on African Soil!        August 2005
Swala DormDue to the delay we experienced in the Toronto airport, what was supposed to be 26 hours of transition between home and Kijabe turned into 50 hours of  travel. You can only imagine how surreal it felt as we finally landed at the Nairobi airport. Soon after we arrived, we discovered only one suitcase out of 12 pieces of lugguage had made it to the Nairobi baggage terminal. Realizing the mad dash at the Toronto Airport while they pushed three British Airway planes out  during the same evening, we weren't surprised our lugguage didn't make it through our flight connection. We were disappointed but certainly not devasted. Many of the passengers were missing some of their lugguage too which made us believe we will eventually get our things. As you might have noticed, we've had to wait for many things since we have been preparing for Kenya. This situation seemed "almost" normal to us.

Regular procedure for most travellers is to spend at least the greater part of the first week unpacking their things and settling in into their new home.  To put it simply, it didn't take a whole lot of effort to unpack our 4 carry-ons and one suitcase.  Along with crisis situations in life often comes a wealth of opportunity. This situation gave us much time to meet several of the missionaries, explore our community, and just get familar to our new surroundings.

The hospitality of the other missionaries has been what has made our transition so much easier. While we have been dealing with jet lag and some disorientation to our new situation, the missionaries have set up our home, placed food
in our cupboards and fridge, offered meals to us on a daily basis, and have given us quick personal orientations to our dorm and the school. We have been doubly blessed during our first week in Kenya because we have been so wonderfully provided for at a time we had so few resources of our own.

Yesterday, we received word that all our luggage arrived in Nairobi.  There they were, all 11 pieces with only one padlock torn off and everything else left unharmed!

his love endures forever." Psalm 107
